Game 5 provided high drama at Ebbets Field as both teams looked to gain the upper hand in the series. Duke Snider doubled home Pee Wee Reese to put Brooklyn on top in the first. Roy Campanella followed with a two-run homer to tag New York starter Bob Grim with three early runs. Dodger starter Roger Craig surrendered an RBI-single to Irv Noren in the third, but otherwise dominated over six innings.
In the top of the seventh, the Yankees loaded the bases with two outs and Yogi Berra at the plate. The 1955 AL MVP belted a grand slam over the screen in right to give his team a 5-3 lead. New York added a run in the eighth to further crush the spirits of the home crowd. But in the bottom of the eighth Phil Rizzuto booted a potential double-play grounder to open the floodgates for a big inning for Brooklyn. After Gil Hodges doubled home Campanella, the game was tied at 6-6.
Both bullpens held the opposing offenses in check over the next three innings. In the bottom of the 12th, New York reliever Jim Konstanty retired the first two Dodgers. But then he hung a breaking ball to Campanella, who blasted it into the upper deck in left. The home crowd erupted and Brooklyn fans across the nation leapt to their feet hearing Vin Scully's call of the dramatic game-winner.
The Dodgers are one win away from their first championship as the series shifts back to Yankee Stadium.
