The fourth game of the 1969 World Series featured a rematch of the Game 1 starters: Tom Seaver vs. Mike Cuellar. Once again, the two Cy Young winners from that year locked horns in a tense pitchers' duel.
The Mets opened the scoring in the second inning when Ed Charles doubled home Donn Clendenon. Baltimore tied it in the fourth on a Frank Robinson solo shot over the left field wall. The game remained knotted at 1-1 until the ninth. In the top of that frame Boog Powell took Seaver deep to give Baltimore a 2-1 lead. Orioles reliever Eddie Watt struck out the first two Mets in the bottom of the ninth. But then pinch hitter Art Shamsky doubled to give his team a chance. Pinch hitter Ken Boswell followed with a double of his own to drive in the tying run and send the game to extra innings.
Neither team could score in the 10th or 11th innings. In the top of the 12th, Mets reliever Nolan Ryan surrendered three consecutive hits to Brooks Robinson, Elrod Hendricks, and Davey Johnson to plate a run for the visitors. Pinch hitter Curt Motton followed with a sacrifice fly to give Baltimore a two-run lead. Oriole reliever Pete Richert retired the Mets in order in the bottom of the 12th to even the series at two games apiece.
Game 4: Baltimore 4, New York 2 (12 innings)
