Andy Etchebarren and Mark Belanger singled to open the top of the third. After a McNally bunt, Don Buford belted a three-run homer--much to the delight of Orioles manager Earl Weaver. Tommie Agee homered in the bottom of the frame to put the Mets on the board. In the bottom of the sixth Donn Clendenon doubled home Cleon Jones to narrow the Baltimore lead to 3-2.
In the top of the seventh Mets reliever Jim McAndrew ran into trouble, surrendering two hits and two walks that plated a pair of runs for Baltimore. An inning later Boog Powell blasted a solo shot to add to the visitors' lead. The Orioles scored again in the top of the ninth on an RBI groundout from Paul Blair. Ed Kranepool singled home a run in the bottom of the frame, but it was too little, too late for the home team.
